Even though the number is small but absolutely you don't your baby is part of that incident. Accident can happen anywhere if you didn’t take a safety precaution. Thus, it is important for baby sling carriers user to take necessary safety precaution to protect your baby from being injured. Successful use of baby sling carrier is first comes from the right fit.
1. When you choosing baby carrier make sure that the baby sling carrier fitting is suitable for your baby’s age. If it is too big, it will create an empty space inside the sling and baby will not sitting on solid position. Most accidents reported that the victim (baby) has shifted to one side, slipped through a leg opening and fallen to the ground. In addition to that, some baby sling carriers have weight limitation. So, make sure you read the manufacturer’s specifications and try-out yourself before you buy.
2. Another accidents reported involving baby wearing is due to the wearer imbalance posture such as tripping and falling. Thus, it is important to practice wearing baby sling carriers with dummy baby such as heavy bear doll or big water balloon before you begin. You can practice walking around and make routine to quickly reflex holding on something to protect your baby when something unexpected happens. Always remember practice makes perfect.
3. Furthermore, never leave baby unattended while in the baby sling carrier. The baby carrier’s frame may topple down and will cause head injury to your baby. If you are using sling type, never use the sling as a blanket while the baby is unattended. Your baby will face difficulty to breath when the blanket covers his face.
4. When you walk through an entrance, watch-out for entrance’s height so that it will not knock your baby’s head. In addition to that, watch-out also for space during turning around so that the entrance’s wall will not hit your baby
5. Always be cautious with what you put inside your baby sling carrier i.e keys, coin, pen, etc. Some baby carrier comes with pouch or pocket. These items can be hazardous to your baby.
6. Your baby may fell down when you bend over your knees, so try to continually support your baby with your arm. Learn to wear your baby sling carrier properly until you really feel comfortable and confident.
7. Do not wear baby sling carrier while cooking, riding a bike, or when you are near to any sharp or hot object.
8. Keep the tail of your sling or wraparound out of harm's way. Long tails can catch fire on gas stoves and fires. They can also get caught in doors.
9. If you are using baby sling, when the baby inside, the lower pouch should ride in line or above your hip bone and the sling should fit comfortably. If your baby sling is too small, you will not be able to get your baby inside the sling. If it is too big, your baby will ride to low and you will not feel your baby is secured inside the baby sling. Furthermore, the sling will slip-off from your shoulder and you still need to continue to support your baby with one hand.
10. If your baby is tiny and seem to be getting lost in the sling, you can roll a receiving blanket and place it under their body. This will help and last their body to stay straight. Fold the blanket flat and place the folded blanket flat directly under you baby spine. You can do this before they are placing it in the sling or after they already in the sling. Be sure that the blanket never covers their face.
